– Open Space Bae, Park Chulho’s solo exhibition
부산 중구 오픈스페이스 배에서 박철호 작가의 개인전 ‘아토믹 보이: 지상 최근의 쇼’가 펼쳐진다. 1990년대 텔레비전에서 방영된 데즈카오사무의 ‘철완 아톰’ 서커스 편을 각색해 최근 나타나는 인류의 단상을 담아낸 이야기들이다. 여기에는 인류가 직면한 기후 위기, 휴머노이드 기술에 대한 논란, 그리고 분화된 가치문제, 개개인이 겪는 정신적인 문제 등을 다층적으로 내포하고 있다. 박철호는 버려진 사물로 조형 작업을 이어왔다. 이번에 전면적으로 제시되는 물질은 스티로폼 잉고트. 지난 전시에선 단순히 덩어리진 채 제시되었었다면 ‘아토믹 보이: 지상 최근의 쇼’에서는 구체적 형태를 갖추기 시작했다. 고온 출압 형식의 스티로폼 잉고트로 조형하려면 원재료가 식어버리기 전에 형태를 잡아야 하기 때문에 난연 기계 앞에 서서 수초 내에 작업을 끝내야 한다. 조형의 거친 표면은 물질에 관한 작가의 시간과 고민을 고스란히 드러내고 있다.
Park Chulho’s personal exhibition “Atomic Boy: The Earth’s Recent Show” will be held on the Open Space Boat in Jung-gu, Busan. These are the stories from the adaptation of Television’s “Astro Boy” circus episode in the 1990s, which depicts a podium of humanity emerging recently. These include the climate crisis facing humanity, controversy over humanoid technology, differentiated value issues, and mental problems experienced by individuals. Park Chulho has continued his molding work with discarded objects. The material presented in full this time is Styrofoam ingot. In the last exhibition, the material was presented simply as a lump, but in “Atomic Boy: The Recent Show on Earth,” it began to take on a concrete form. In order to form a Styrofoam ingot in the hot extrusion type, the material must be shaped before it cools down, so it must stand in front of a flame-retardant machine and finish the work within a few seconds. The rough surface of the sculpture reveals the artist’s time and concerns about the material.
